Weight Control |
There are over 34 million American adults who care concidered obese. Another 45 million are overweight. Weight loss is a national obsession. At any goven time, 25 million Americans are seriously dieting. As fried, fatty foods have increased in our diets, and physical labor has decreased, there has been a 500-800% increase in obesity in the 20th century. The answers to weight control aren't simple. Most serious dieters are able to lose about 10% of their body weight on a strict diet, yet, typically, two-thirds of that weight is gained back within a year, and 90% is regained within five years. Weight control today is a strategy of prevention lifestyle, change in behavior modication, an attitude of keeping control of weight and good health. Even though Americans are always looking for the "miracle magic bullet" for slimness and body tone, everyone is slowly realizing that a good nutritional diet has to be front and center for permanent results. Weight loss is a component of a sound nutritious eating plan, rather than a try at the latest fad. People are becoming more motivated for health reasons to lose weight and want to change their way of eating to insure both looks and health. As many as 300,000 people die every year of illnesses linked to obesity, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. These as well as other diet related health ailments, which just about cover 95% of doctor visits, costs us billions of dollars every year. Centuries ago, obesity wasn't a problem because our ancestors got lots of physical exercise and ate a healthy diet. Aong came the industrial revolution and a multitude of environmental and lifestyle changes--epitomized by the "couch potato syndrom." Good health is the result of giving the body what it needs--on a daily basis. That means eating a diet containing fiber, and fresh fruits and vegetables; drinking losts of water; and exercvising regularly. It means making good decisions and clear choices. It means taking charge of your life. Weight Control means taking charge of your food intake, your exercise program and your lifestyle. The diet aid that works for one person may not work for another. The main factor is the individual's desire. Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to take control of your life? And, do you understand what it means to be personally responsible for your health? The "buck stops" where ever you're at! Exercise must be an integral part of any weight control program. Exercise actually eases hunger. You are thirsty after a workout because your body calls for replacement of water and lost electrolytes, but not hungry. Not only do muscles become toned, heart and lungs become stronger, and fats lost, but the body doesn't call for calorie replacement right away. Its own glycogens life blood sugar levels and provide a feeling of well being. Proteins... Carbohydrates... Fats... Sixty-five to seventy-five percent of your diet should be in in unrefined, clean-buring complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates like those from whole grains, pasta, vegetables, rice, beans and fruits, are the key to weight management. Twenty to twenty-five percent hould be in high grade proteins from whole grains, nuts, beans raw dairy products, tofu and other soy foods, yogurt, kefir, eggs, and some occasional poultry,l fish, and seafood. Vegetable protein is best for mineral absorption and bone density. Eating excess protein, especially from red meats, creates a condition that hampers good health. Excess amino acids from too much protein causes the formation of toxic ammonia in the body. The body then protects itself by converting ammonia into less toxic urea and excretes it via the kidneys. Too much protein can also overload the kidneys (you feel this in lower back pain) and poison the blood. About 10 to 15 percent of a good weight management diet should be in energy-producing fats and oils necessary for glycogen storage. The best fats are from unrefined, mono-or polyunsaturated oils, a little pure butter, nuts, low fat cheeses, and whole grain snacks. Water is critical. When the body senses lack of water, it will naturally
start to retain fluid. Waste and body impurities will not be filtered out
properly, and the liver will not metabolize stored fats for energy. Six
to eight glasses of water a day are a must, even if you don't feel thirsty.
