Toxic Drugs or Terrorists: Both Can Kill You! By Walt "dr health" Edwards Please contact me using this number: 1-541-247-7077 Past issues available on my web site: getwel-newsletter.
We have been living in a world threaten by terrorism. The fear of terrorism was the major reason
President Bush was voted in office. Due to the Bush Administration we are in a major conflict losing
American lives overseas every day as well as the many young men and women returning with some type of
physical and psychological problems that they and their families must deal with for the rest of their
lives. In addition, we are spending billions of dollars in the name of terrorism, our deficient is
growing every day, and as the cost of fuel goes up, the threat of inflation increases.
We are reminded every day, by the media, of terrorism through out the world and here at home. If the loss of life is the major criteria to label events as terrorism, then consideration must be made in another area because it is not being reported by the various media. For this reason and the fact every American can be effected, this month's newsletter is devoted to this important subject. The horrible tragedies that occurred in New York on 9/11/01 that resulted in the lives lost that day to terrorism -- some 3,000 Americans -- and the 168 lives lost in the Oklahoma blast, on April 19, 1995, caused by an American terrorist, received wide media coverage. However, an even greater tragedy to the number of Americans who die needlessly every day goes unnoticed with no warning to the public of the threat to their welfare as a result of the mistakes of conventional medicine. According to the medical report, Death by Medicine, by Drs. Gary Null, Carolyn Dean, Martin Feldman, Debora Rasio and Dorothy Smith, 783,936 people die in the United States every year as a result of conventional medicine mistakes. This is the equivalent of six jumbo jet crashes a day for an entire year. Another 1995 study stated, "The iatrogenic [doctor-caused] death rate dwarfs the annual automobile accident mortality rate of 45,000 and accounts for more deaths than all other accidents combined." And that study was issued before the Vioxx disaster which resulted in numerous deaths all by itself. Some 7.5 million unnecessary medical and surgical procedures are performed each year. Another 8.9 million people will be unnecessarily hospitalized during the same period. And 2.2 million of those people will have adverse drug reactions in the hospital to the medications they are prescribed. The number of unnecessarily prescribed drugs is astronomical; it runs into the tens of millions annually for antibiotics alone. Using drugs to treat illness and unnecessary medical and surgical procedures is the driving force behind all of this. The industries that make the drugs and medical technologies wish to continue to sell them. They use their financial clout to influence what is taught in medical schools, what techniques are used in hospitals, and what drugs are prescribed and how often, all to maximize their profits. That means selling the most drugs and medical equipment possible, even if they are unnecessary -- even if they are actually deadly. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), "Adverse drug reactions are the fourth leading cause of death in America. Reactions to prescription and over-the-counter medications kill far more people annually than all illegal drug use combined." Annually, drug companies spend billions on TV commercials and print media. They spend over $12 billion a year handing out drug samples and employing sales forces to influence doctors to promote specifically branded drugs. The drug industry employs over 1,200 lobbyists, including 40 former members of Congress. Drug companies have spent close to a billion dollars since 1998 on lobbying. In 2004, drug companies and their officials contributed at least $17 million to federal election campaigns. The crippling costs of health care are driving families into bankruptcy, and the swell of boomers passing into retirement could devastate the federal health care system. There is increasing attention being paid to the role preventive care--including use of dietary supplements--could pay. If medicine focused on proper diet, regular exercise, and other sensible and free lifestyle changes, vast numbers of Americans would no longer need or want to purchase the drugs the pharmaceutical industry desperately wishes to continue to sell. Awareness is the key to correct this situation. We must begin educating the public on how they are being deceived by big corporations and the government. The task of going against the powerful pharmaceutical companies, medical technology companies, and special interest groups with enormous vested interests in the business of medicine stand would appear to be impossible. However, and making a change can only occur by taking the first step, we are on the way to improve the condition reported in this newsletter. Thought For The Day: If you were sick 200 years ago, you would have been better off in the hands of an American Indian medicine man than you would have been in those of a European physician. The Indian would have given you mental therapy, food and herb remedies. The European physician would have drained away your blood... |
