A. Children With Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) May
Benefit From Fish Oil!
B. Long Term Hormone Replacement Therapy Halted Due to Risks Outweigh
It's Benefits!
C. Essential Fatty Acids Are Important!
D. Magnesium Is Important For Your Muscles!
A. Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have
problems paying attention, listening to instructions, and completing
tasks; they also fidget and squirm, are hyperactive, blurt out answers,
and interrupt others. It is conservatively estimated that 3-5% of the
school-age population has ADHD. Although drugs, such as Ritalin, are
frequently used to treat ADHD, they are fraught with complications.
Disadvantages include possible side effects, including decreased
appetite and growth, insomnia, increased irritability, and rebound
hyperactivity when the drug wears off.
It appears that children with ADHD just are not able to chemically
convert the plant omega-3, ALA to fish oil very well. The problem is
further worsened when omega-6 fats are consumed and the ideal omega-6:3
ratio of 1:1, progresses to the typical standard American ratio of 15:1.
Many of these children have ratios which are even worse and can be as
high as 50:1. This study provides the research evidence supporting the
use of the omega-3 fats found in fish oils to effectively address the
underlying deficiency that is present in most of these children and
appears to be contributing to the ADHD.
B. By this time everyone should have heard about the long term,
government sponsored clinical trial which began between 1993 and 1998
being stopped prematurely. It was suppose to conclude in 2005. The
main reason for stopping was an increased risk of invasive breast cancer
in women receiving HRT after 5.2 years of treatment. This fact, combined
with an increase in cardiovascular events that began in the first year
of HRT treatment and persisted, out weighed the benefits.
C. Much attention is given to fatty acids these days. The following is
a brief overview of what fatty acids are, and their primary functions:
Single Bond fatty acids are saturated fatty acids, by virtue of the fact
that they are saturated with hydrogen. Saturated fats are found in meat
and dairy products. Double bond fatty acids are unsaturated fatty
acids, generally referred to as Trans fatty acids. When there are 2 or
more double bonds, these fatty acids are called polyunsaturated fatty
acids.
Essential fatty acids (EFA) are the highly publicized Omega Fatty
acids. There are two most frequently referenced types of Omega Fatty
acids, Omega 3 and Omega 6. The vegetable sources of Omega 3 are
primarily flaxseed and wheat germ oils. The vegan form of Omega 3 is
Alpha linolenic (ALA). ALA must be supplemented or supplied through the
diet as it cannot be synthesized by the body. Animal sources of Omega 3
are the Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
forms, primarily from fish oil. Omega 6 or GLA is derived mainly from
evening primrose seed oil and black currant seed oil.
EFA's reduce levels of substances that could impair immunity. They also
assist blood vessels in dilation, which can decrease pain due to poor
circulation and inflammation. Most importantly, they lower blood levels
of triglycerides. EFAšs can reduce hostility and stress, improve
symptoms of chronic fatigue, improve mood and enhance learning and
memory.
D. Magnesium is part of the cells of your tissues and organs. It is
bound with phosphorous and calcium in your bones and bloodstream. More
than 300 reactions within the body use magnesium to produce energy, make
new proteins, maintain acid-alkaline balance, keep heartbeat steady,
activate enzymes to metabolize blood sugars, and help nerves and muscles
work efficiently.
Magnesium is vital for proper bone growth and is indirectly related to
adequate calcium absorption. A 2:1 ration of calcium to magnesium is
essential to maintain strong bones. Although most Americans understand
the importance of calcium most do not realize that we are deficient in
muscle-relaxing magnesium. Why? Because most people consume foods
containing high amounts of calcium, but very little magnesium. Many
complaints related to muscles that cause folks to run to their doctor
can be solved by simply taking a good magnesium supplement.
Thought For The Day... From the perception of the five-sensory human,
the physical world is an unaccountable given in which we unaccountable
find ourselves, and we strive to dominate it so that we can survive.
From the perception of the multisensory human, the physical world is a
learning environment that is created jointly by the souls that share it,
and everything that occurs with it serves their learning.
