A Common Sense Approach To Good Health! By Walt "dr health" Edwards Please contact me using this number: 1-541-247-7077 Past issues available on my web site: getwel-newsletter. This is the subject of my class to be presented at the Gold Beach SWOCC Center, Wednesdays, noon - 1pm, July 6 - August 10, 2005. Students can bring their lunch and all tax-deductible donations can be designated to the Gold Beach Senior Center. A Nutritionist view of why and how sickness can occur and what can be done to prevent conditions that can produce disease will be covered in the six hour class. By becoming aware of the importance of lifestyle, diet, digestion, toxic conditions, etc. and how they all can affect the body, mind, and spirit connections to good health, the student can then choose to apply those changes that can best benefit their health and well-being. Major Cause of Sickness is Lifestyle and Diet! According to the American Journal of Public Health, 1995, more than half of working Americans have either a serious chronic disease such as arthritis, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, gall bladder disease, diabetes, rheumatism, emphysema, serious arteriosclerosis, colon problems and more recently the obesity epidemic, to mention a few of the more well known health problems. For the non-working dependents and elderly the health conditions are much more alarming. Our health care system has serious problems that are worsening. More than half the costs of illness are wasted on conditions that could be prevented. While change in the health care system seems to be on everyone's political agenda, the vested interests of the $trillion dollar medical-industrial complex will allow very little real change to occur. The system will not change. There is too much money to be lost. Each individual must take responsibility for their own health and take preventive action with a healthy diet, exercise and most important becoming aware of HOW to accomplish these changes. Behavior Modification: Your mind, not your body, is in control of your nutritional habits. There can also be a biochemical effect that could contribute to habitual emotions. It can be a difficult challenge to make changes to poor habits. You must learn to rewrite the software of your mind by replacing poor habits with good habits. Commitment to make the necessary changes to your life style is critical for success. First, you must admit, to yourself, you have a problem. Second, become aware of what and how to make the necessary changes to accomplish exactly what you know must be done. Third, just DO IT! Taking responsibility of your own health is even more critical living in this beautiful part of Oregon because the limited number of doctors that are taking new patients. Others complain about the level of medical care available in the Curry County. Becoming aware of what you can do for yourself and your family becomes even more important for those of us in Curry County than living in the "Big City". Stress Factors: Every cell and tissue in your body is affected by stress. Your immune system is weakened, your body is robbed of important vitamins and minerals. Your insulin spikes causing fat storage. High insulin also increases your appetite. Stress hinders the digestion, absorption, and elimination of foods resulting in acid build up and your body being out of balance. Detoxification: Living cells generate huge amounts of waste every day. Western medicine often fails to counsel patients effectively on ways to take out the trash. Accumulating trash leads the body down the path to disease and hastens the body to grow old before itıs time. It is the most underrated subject in preventive health. Why? Because every tissue in the body is fed by the blood stream, supplied via the bowel, when the bowel is toxified, so is the liver and the rest of the organs and tissues. Proper bowel functions entails having more than one good bowel movement per day. If we eat 3 meals a day and only eliminate once a day, where are the other two meals? Symptoms of an unhealthy digestive tract are poor digestion, gas, poor skin, body odor, stomach bloat, fatigue, lower backache, bad breath, stiff joints, poor elimination, etc. (See for yourself, use a mirror.) Take Tylenol At Your Own Risk! Although acetaminophen is considered an over-the-counter medication, this does not necessarily mean it is safe or void of side effects. Even asthma may seem somewhat inconsequential to some, but, according to an FDA panel three years ago, 15,000 people end up in the emergency room every year because of acetaminophen poisoning. Ingesting acetaminophen can have devastating effects on your health, especially if done on a regular basis. Its side effects can be numerous, but most importantly it can cause your liver and kidneys to fail. Another word of caution - If you take Tylenol or other types of acetaminophen regularly, it is important to understand that you can limit some of the damage by taking N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), which is the rate-limiting nutrient for the formation of the intracellular antioxidant glutathione. Thought For The Day: To understand that we reap sooner or later what we sow, to see that for every action there is reaction, to acknowledge that for every deed there is consequence, to know that there is continuity between initiation and outcome, to remember that what goes from us returns to us is another way of describing the action of KARMA or "Do to others as you would like done to you"! |
