The Conflict Between Conventional and Alternative Approaches To Medicine!
By Walt Edwards

In Ancient China you paid the local health practitioner to keep you in good health. You were required to follow directions in life style and diet. However, if you got sick you were no longer required to pay until you regained your health. The motivation of your health specialist was to keep you well in order to receive payment. If you elected not to comply with your practitioner¹s health instructions, your health would be your responsibility.

The motivation is different in the West because you pay or your insurance pays your doctor when you get sick. Conventional medicine depends on patented drugs and treatments that insurance companies consider as ³proper² treatment for the ³diagnosed² sickness. Unfortunately, according to a recent report published by The Journal of the American Medical Association over 50 percent of ³diagnosis² is wrong which means that over 50 percent of prescriptions must also be wrong!

Shocking facts you are NOT apt to hear about by the media: The April 15, 1998 Journal of the American Medical Association reported that there are more than 2,000,000 drug "reactions" annually in the United States, and that more than 100,000 of those reactions were fatal. This makes prescription drugs the fourth leading cause of death in America. Does this surprise you?

Some examples that illustrate the differences between conventional and alternative approaches to medicine are:

1. If you have arthritis, a conventional physician may normally order Celebrex or Vioxx which are known to produce side effects. (NSAIDs, are responsible for 16,500 deaths per year from GI complications). Alternative physicians may order glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate , herbal pain relievers, a change in diet, eliminate the night shade vegetables (tomatoes, white potatoes, egg plant and green/red peppers), and topical MSM. Some other recommendations may be digestive enzymes, a through detox including a supervised fast, a review of foods according to your blood type, etc.

2. If you have elevated cholesterol, you'll get a prescription for Lipitor, Zocor, or another statin drug. (They eliminate COQ 10 from your system). Alternative physicians would prescribe omega 3 flax seed oil or fish oil and red yeast rice as well as review of their diet, increase fiber, and increase their daily activity.

3. If you have diabetes, your doctor is likely to put you on Glucophage. Alternative physicians would select vanadyl sulfate, alpha lipoic acid, chromium, Gymnema sylvestre, reduce high glycemic carbs, increase daily activity, eat five small meals daily which contain protein, and include vitamins and minerals through out the day.

RESEARCH REVIEW

* In a 2003 study men taking 120 mg of coenzyme Q10 a day for one year halved the risk of recurrent heart attacks.

* According to the National Institute of Medicine, half of the medical procedures, tests, and drugs used in the country are unnecessary.

* Irish researchers found that just 500 mg of vitamin C a day lowered blood pressure and arterial stiffness in patients with type 2 diabetes.

* The more TV people watch, the greater the likelihood they will develop diabetes.

* A recent 23-year study found that a high intake of vitamin E reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

* Excess abdominal fat isn't just a cosmetic issue. It is also linked to a greater risk of heart disease, diabetes, some cancers, and early death.

* Side effects of blood pressure lowering drugs are so significant that half of all patients prescribed such drugs stop taking them within a year.

* The biggest dietary cause of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), harmful compounds that damage tissues and accelerate aging, is DIET SODA.

* More than 90 percent of all hospital bills have errors.

* Doing good deed stimulates the release of feel-good endorphins in the brain.

* The FDA has finally released indisputable evidence showing that Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, and related drugs increase risk of suicide in children. What took so long?

* High-glycemic carbohydrates such as bread, sweets, and chips may be an underlying cause of acne.

* In a recent study, eating tuna or broiled fish at least three times a week halved risk of death from heart attack, but eating fried fish and fish sandwiches actually raised risk.

* More than 90 percent of physicians recently surveyed ranked diabetes as the top risk factor for cardiovascular disease, above high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, obesity, and smoking.

Thought For The Day: Most disease, including cardiovascular and cancer, are preventable with changes in diet, lifestyle, exercise and taking preventive supplements. Prevention of disease requires each individual to take responsibility for their own health and make wise decisions while they are still able.
