FIGHTING FOR TRUTH AND ALTERNATIVE HEALTH FREEDOMFACT #1: A recent published study in The Lancet Medical Journal shakes up the medical world. Scientists in Hawaii cast doubt on the benefits of reducing blood cholesterol in the elderly. Research shows low cholesterol levels could be linked to higher death rates in people over 70 years old. Their study confirms earlier studies suggesting advice to cut cholesterol levels may not be applicable to the elderly and low levels of cholesterol could even have a detrimental effect. Increased mortality in elderly with low serum cholesterol. FACT #2: In early August, Bayer Pharmaceutical removed cerivastatin (baycol) -- a cholesterol-lowing drug taken by 700,000 Americans - from the the U.S. market because of muscle destruction linked to 31 U.S. deaths and at least nine more fatalities abroad. THESE STUDIES DEMONSTRATE that drug therapy for reducing cholesterol may not always be advised. Also, keep in mind, the magic bullet approach of simply lowering cholesterol or blood pressure is not enough. Today in the "land of the free" we naively assume that if something works and it's safe, then it will come to fruition. The reality is that innovations are blocked by business interests and especially our government, which impedes progress and keep us in the dark about advancements that could improve our lives. For those who find this hard to believe, consider the inefficient, wasteful, pollution producing gas powered engine which should have been replaced many years ago. However, the petroleum industry continue to spent millions of dollars preventing the development and production of a more efficient, non pollutant engine. Consider the billions of dollars spent in researching the cure for cancer. Those in power also suppress information about the dangers of drugs and surgery, while confusing the public by releasing half-truthes about natural herbs such as kava kava and ephedra. It may surprise you to know that surgical procedures, unlike drugs, do not require any proof that they are safe or helpful. Seventy-three million surgeries are performed in this country each year, all on the presumption that they will be beneficial, yet most of them have never been studied scientifically. Such is the case with coronary artery bypass surgery. Several well-designed, comprehensive studies have shown that the majority of people who have by pass surgery receive no benefit, and some fare even worse than those treated conservatively. If you are recommended to have bypass or any other surgery, ask your physician to show you the scientific studies that demonstrate it to be beneficial. Medical students learn that the primary if not only therapy for virtually every disease is a prescription drug. Strong links to the drug companies become even stronger after graduation, since the ongoing medical education comes largely from drug sales representatives, medical journals filled with pharmaceutical ads, and conferences where physicians are ÒeducatedÓ on the use of drugs. Now the drug companies are even coming after patients, spending $2 billion a year in direct-to-consumer advertisements. And their efforts are paying off. Our healthcare system is being bankrupted by more and costlier drugs. Antidepressants (Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Effexor, and Luvox) act on the serotonin system in the brain. They have numerous adverse effects, including agitation in roughly one in four people taking them. These drugs can also trigger violent, suicidal behavior, even in normal individuals. Almost all of the school shootings you've heard about in the past few years, including the Columbine High School tragedy, involved students taking these drugs. After taking Paxil, Donald Schel, a 60-year-old man from Wyoming, shot and killed his wife, daughter, granddaughter, and then himself. The family sued drug maker GlaxoSmithKline and WON! The company was ordered to pay $8 million to the family. Yet doctors continue to prescribe these antidepressants. Why isnÕt the FDA stopping the use of these drugs? If it was a natural herb like Kava Kava it would be outlawed and taken off the market. Most heart disease is preventable with simple changes in diet, lifestyle, exercise and taking preventive supplements. The alternative preventive choice requires each individual to take responsibility for their own health. However, if you choose to make no changes to the above, then be prepared to need one or more of the following: ANGIOGRAM--$10,880 Used to diagnose the severity of coronary artery disease. PACEMAKER IMPLANT SURGERY--$25,000 Pacemakers are battery-powered devices implanted just under the skin that send out electrical impulses to stimulate heart beat. BYPASS SURGERIES--$44,820 This procedure is to bypass blocked portions of the coronary arteries. The veins of the leg are usually used, however they are not designed to withstand the high pressure blood flow from the heart. ThereÕs just too much wear and tear, so many patients have to go in for second or third bypasses at $44,820 or more for each procedure. BALLOON ANGIOPLASTIES--$15,000 A balloon-tipped catheter inflates - or opens up - blocked arteries. In 4% of people, the procedures causes a heart attack. In 5%, the blockage is actually made worse. In less than 1 year, statistics show that 35% of ÒtreatedÓ blockages actually returned to their pre-op severity. Diet related health ailments (diabetes, colon, cancer, allergies, arthritis, high blood pressure and heart disease) which just about cover 90% of doctor visits, costs us billions of dollars every year and causes as many as 300,000 deaths a year. Shocking facts: ARTHRITIS... Conventional medicine offers little for arthritis sufferers beyond pain-reducing NSAIDs, which are responsible for 16,500 deaths per year from GI complications. HEART DISEASE...Heart disease is our #1 killer. Every 29 seconds an American suffers a heart attack. Fish oil (2-4 capsules) reduces the formation of dangerous blood clots and lowers blood fats.
