Nutrient Depletion Occurs by Drug Use and
More About Inflammation Causing Clogged Arteries!

By Walt "dr health" Edwards

Walt Edwards is drhealth Billions of dollars are spent every year by drug companies on PR and marketing campaigns. You are told over and over how safe and effective their drugs are, along with a long list of side effects. However, nothing is ever mentioned about drug-nutrient depletion. Research shows that virtually every single prescription medicine you take can deplete your body of a nutrient, whether it be an interference mechanism, meaning that the drug itself interferes with various metabolic pathways and creates an absorption issue, or whether it's just something called competitive inhibition, where the drug competes with the nutrient for binding sites on the cell. Regardless of the mechanism, virtually every single prescription medicine you take depletes the body of important nutrients.

In addition, studies on the use of prescription drug reactions report over 106,000 Americans die per year from prescribed drugs. That makes prescription drugs the fourth-leading cause of death, behind heart disease, cancer, and stroke. This is a serious problem to public health, so why don't we hear about IT reported by the news media? In addition to the 106,000 people who died from prescription drugs, the same study found 2.2 million more who suffered side effects and many so severe that they were made ill, disabled and/or required hospital stays!

The whole idea of drug nutrient depletion is a fascinating study. If you're taking a "water pill" like Lasix, it depletes the body of vitamin B-1 along with the other B and C vitamins. Minerals tend to be excreted at the same time. Taking a statin drug such as Lipitor can actually increase the risk of congestive heart failure because it depletes CoQ-10 a very important nutrient for every cell in your body.

Let's consider hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which has recently been in the news. Not as good as they hoped and it does increase your threat to cancer. In addition, HRT depletes the body of vitamin B-6 and B-12 as well as the mineral magnesium. If you have a depletion of vitamin B-6 and B-12 your homocysteine level is going to increase. For those readers who may not have heard of homocysteine, it is amino acid that, if it is elevated in the blood will increase your risk of heart disease. You need vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12 and folic acid in order to control and lower your homocysteine level. That's number one. Number two is HRT depletes the body of magnesium which has two roles. The use of HRT may be another reason you're gaining weight.

The first role of magnesium is in the maintenance of blood pressure and cardiovascular function. The other is in the bones, which is another area HRT was purported to help in. So what does magnesium have to do with the bones? Calcium and magnesium work together; and magnesium, along with vitamin D, helps transport calcium into bones. Now you have no effect on osteoporosis, which HRT was supposed to help. So you're in trouble if you don't replenish the B-6 and magnesium. (Remember....if you take one B vitamin, you should also take the whole B complex.)

According to Dr. Stephen Sinatra, M.D., board-certified cardiologist and author, almost everything he was taught about heart disease in medical school has finally been proven wrong! He also reports family practice doctors always talk about "evidence-based medicine," but much of their advice is based on nothing more than guesses, peer pressure, and the high-pressure sales tactics and the material supplied by drug sale reps!

The latest research at leading medical centers, including Harvard, is discovering the real cause of cardiovascular disease is not cholesterol as such...but INFLAMMATION of your arteries. The blockages that lead to heart attacks and strokes are not passive "buildup" of cholesterol-laden plaque but are actually severely inflamed infections--like boils-- in the walls of the artery itself.

Dr. Susan Lack, M.D., reports on C-reactive Protein, (inflammation) levels in her April issue of "Women's Wellness Today", newsletter, "Since my last article in May, a 10-year Harvard Medical School study of 15,632 initially healthy women confirmed that elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) correlates strongly with elevated risk for stroke and coronary heart disease (december 2006, Journal of the American College of Cardiology). And, an Israeli study of 2,723 male and 256 female heart patients published in the February 2007 issue of Cardiology found significantly higher CRP levels in women than men, suggesting it's a more sensitive indicator of a woman's risk of a cardiovascular event, with the risk and potential severity increasing as CRP increases. For all women ages 45 or older, I recommend that the CRP blood test be part of routine heart health screening".

Dr. Alan Inglis, M.D. reports in Health Revelations on the highly paid interventional cardiologists placing a million stents in patients every year. In a recent study, 2,287 angina patients with at least a 70 percent artery blockage were divided into two groups: One was given stents and drugs as treatment, and the other group was given only drugs. The results showed that unless you've had a heart attack, the use of drug therapy alone is just as effective--if not moreso--in preventing heart attacks when compared to a treatment of stenting and drug therapy.

Consider changing your diet such as the Mediterranean-style diet with exercise--was proven to be 35 to 45 percent more effective than stents. For those who endure the risks of a stent procedure--such as blood clotting--or the cost, for absolutely no long range benefit.

Dr. Inglis goes on to say, "The cardiac bypass sugeries is one sacred cow I'd personally like to put out to pasture." Over 500,000 of these are performed every year at extravagant cost of many billions of dollars. That's despite the best available evidence, which suggests that only about 20 percent of those folks (if that many!) enjoy any real survival benefit after five years.

Even more disturbing? Forty percent of all those patients will experience irreversible damage to their mental function and 50 percent of all bypasses will develop new blockages within five to 10 years. These figures could change by improvements to diet and lifestyle.

Drs. Roizen, M.D. and Oz, M.D. supports the diet and lifestyle changes vs bypass surgery as reported in their book, YOU Staying Young. In addition they recommend reducing inflammation (C-Reacive Protein) with anti-inflammatory supplements, B vitamins and CoQ-10, to mention a few.

Thought For The Day: As 2007 winds down to it's final day, we should prepare for what 2008 has in store for each of us. When one door closes, another opens to each of us. Reduce your attention to the negative aspects of life like blame, anger, resentment, frustration, and all other negative beliefs and emotions. Teach yourself to appreciate everything. The bad as well as the good. Express gratitude for every single moment of your life. It is important to feed the energy of gratitude within you. If you are feeling stuck use more statements of gratitude to get your positive emotions moving again. Put yourself on a gratitude diet this holiday season and watch your world start to shift your life. The more you create feelings of appreciation and gratitude, the more you will attract into your life that which you can appreciate and that which you can feel gratitude for GOOD HEALTH AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
