In the early 1990's, Dr. Paul Ridker became convinced
that some sort of inflammatory reaction and not
cholesterol was causing plaque in the arteries to
burst and cause heart attacks. He needed a simple
blood test that could provide a marker for chronic
infammation. He decided the best marker would be
C-reactive protein (CRP), a molecule produced by the
liver in resonse to the inflammatory signal. The
higher the level of inflammation, the higher levels of
CRP. Everyone who suspects they might have chronic
inflammation, and every senior should ask their doctor
for a Highly Sensitive C-reaction test. You might
also ask your doctor for his or her "protocol" to
treat a high risk reading of CRP. Please let us know
what your MD recommends.
Dr. Andrew Weil, leading integrative medicine specialist says, "chronic inflammation just may be the root of all degenerative disease." And professor of gastroenterology at ehe University of Aberdeen, UK, Emad El-Omar, says in an article in the The Scientist (July 14, 2003), "I personally believe that chronic inflammation is the root of all evil." Time magazine states, "Instead of different treatments for, say, heart disease, Alzheimer's and colon cancer, there might be a single, inflammation-reducing remedy that would prevent all three." No actual treatment for high C-Reactive Protein is mentioned in the www.WebMD.com report. However, the www.healthyheartmiracle.com stated, "Recent research shows that having a high C-Reactive Protein blood test increases your risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke by twice as much as having a high cholesterol. CRP measures inflammation, part of the immune reaction that protects you from infection when you injure yourself. It causes redness, pain and swelling and can damage the inner lining of arteries, and break off clots from ateries to block the flow of blood to cause strokes and heart attacks. CRT levels fluctuate from day to day, and levels increase with againg, high blood pressure, alcohol use, smoking, low levels of physical activity, chronic fatigue, coffee consumption, having elevated triglycerides, inuslin resistance or diabetes, taking estrogen, eating a high protein diet, and suffering sleep disturbances, or depression. If you have none of these known causes, at this time the best ways we know to reduce C-Reactive Protein levels are exercise and diet that includes omega-3 fatty acids. Statins appear to protect against inflammation as well as cholesterol, but they can cause nerve and muscle damage and deplete the body of co-enzyme Q10." Besides my normal supplements, I added Sedona Labs, SerraPhase anti-inflammatory. Over 140 studies have firmly established that high levels of chronic inflammation predict significantly greater risk for serious disease and death. (National Library of Medicine, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez.) A New England Journal of Medicine study showed that people with high levels of CRP were almost three times as likely to die from a heart attack, regardless of their cholesterol levels. High levels of C-Reactive protein also indicate who is more likely to get colon, esophageal, liver, stomach, prostate and lymphoma cancers (Oncology, Vol. 16, No.2, Feb. 2002, "Chronic Inflammation and Cancer.") If you feel the flu or a cold coming on, reach for Monolaurin. Glycerol monolaurate or Monolaurin...is a fatty acid derivative that is naturally found in breast milk. It works by destroying the fatty coatings that allow viruses to latch onto your healthy cells. Without those coatings, the viruses quickly die. Laboratory tests show that glycerol monolaurate or better known by its trade name Monolaurin kills infuenza, herpes and several other viruses.! Alpha Lipoic Acid is a unique, "universal" antioxidant, both lipid and water soluble, able to fight free radicals in both fat and water mediums. It is among the most powerful liver detoxifiers ever discovered. Lipoic acid is a potent promoter of glutathione and an important co-factor in energy metablolism, especially in stress conditions. It also increases the effectiveness of other antioxidants, like vitamins C and E, showing great promise for heart disease, diabetes, (approved in Europe for diabetic retinopathy), neuro-degenerative diseases, such as Parkingson's and Alzheimer's, inflammatory diseases like arthitis and irritable bowel syndromes, HIV and AIDS, cataracts, heavy-metal toxity and detoxification support. Helps with appetite control in natural weight loss program and should be taken with meals to prolong its delivery and to prevent a hypoglycemic response. Alternatives to aspirin to reduce the risk of heart atttack? Simple lifestyle changes such as Omega 3 fish oil and exercising can have a tremendously positive effect on your cardiovascular system. If you are at a high risk of heart attack for one reason or another, or you simply know you won't be changing your lifestyle for the better, it may also be in your best interest to try Nattokinase before aspirin. Nattokinase is a fibrinolytic (breaks up fobrin, which is found in clots) enzyme made from fermented soybeans. It is comparable to aspirin in its beneficial effects on your blood, but without any side effects. Using Nattokinase in combination with appropriate lifestyle and dietary modifications can provide excellent protection from heart attacks and many other forms of heart disease including stroke prevention. Living cells generate huge amounts of waste every day. Western medicine often fails to counsel patients effectively on ways to take out the trash. Accumulating trash leads the body down the path to disease and hastens the body to grow old before its time. Consider a good detox like Cleanse Smart or Ultimate Cleanse to start the year off. There are a number of studies that show that Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oils are associated with decreased depression. If this subject interests you, I suggest reading Dr. Stoll's book The Omega-3 Connection. He is a Harvard psychiatrist who has done a great job of comliling the evidence supporting the use of fish oils for depression, joint pain and circulation problems. Emotional Toxicty... Besides physical toxicity affecting the immune system, an important aspect which should always be considered is emotional baggage that can drag us down into depression. Most of the emotions you feel in a day is not even about today. You are just recycling old emotional baggage that has never been cleared. It is so familiar, it has become a part of your self-identity, but you know it is not a part of your true identity because it causes you discomfort. 5-HTP, indentified by science as 5-hydroxytryptophan, has been found to help with mind-based difficulties, such as anxiety disorders, insomnia, alcoholism, PMS, obesity, eating disorders, drug addiction, autism and depression. Cardiac Arrhythmia... Having any sort of arrhythmia should compel your physician to queston whether you have adequate magnesium levels, as low magnesium levels have been related to abnormal heart rhythms. Low magnesium commonly accompanies low potassium. Leg cramps, especially those that occur at night, can signal a magnesium deficiency.
